The discussions held last Wednesday in Egypt and over the weekend in Israel, with the participation of Abbas Kamel, the chief of Egypt's Intelligence Directorate, and his Israeli counterparts, were described as "a last opportunity round," meant to prevent Israel's invasion of Rafah in exchange for moving forward a deal that would release Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
