Android users of Google Chrome may soon receive a new feature designed to help them manage their browsing habits and reduce the clutter of excessive tabs. Recent updates to the Chromium codebase indicate that Google is preparing to launch a feature that automatically organises and manages inactive tabs.

According to a report by 9to5Google, the feature, temporarily called "Android Tab Declutter," will assist users in taming their browsing habits by automatically archiving and deleting inactive tabs. Although the exact details of its functionality are not yet fully disclosed, it seems like the feature will target tabs that have not been active for a considerable duration, thereby aiding users in maintaining a neater browsing window and reducing the manual effort of handling and closing numerous open tabs.

Currently, Chrome provides a feature for archiving and resuming tabs, which lets users temporarily suspend inactive tabs. However, soon the "Tab Declutter" feature will further enhance this function by automating the identification and management of inactive tabs, thus eliminating the need for manual intervention.

As per the report, the feature will offer:

Automatic Archiving/Deletion: Chrome will detect tabs that have not been visited for some time and will automatically archive or delete them.

Resurrecting the Past: Users will likely have the option to revisit and restore these tabs later, akin to the existing tab pause/resume feature.

As for the availability, while the feature is not yet accessible for testing, speculation hints at its potential launch with Chrome 125, anticipated in May 2024. It's worth noting that development schedules are subject to change, so this timeframe is tentative.

Notably, this Android feature mirrors Google's recent initiatives on the desktop. Chrome M121 introduced an AI-powered "tab organisation" tool that automatically groups similar tabs, assisting users in managing their browsing sessions more effectively.

Meanwhile, Google is enhancing history management on Android Chrome. Reportedly, a new floating shortcut menu is currently in beta testing and is providing detailed control and filters for precise history cleanup. Moreover, Google is also developing innovative ways to give users more control over their browsing data. Recent beta versions of Chrome suggest the introduction of new tools for clearing browsing history, which would offer users increased flexibility in managing their digital footprint.

Interestingly, as Google continues to refine and expand Chrome's features, the new "Tab Declutter" feature marks a significant step towards a more organised and user-focused browsing experience on Android devices. As automation becomes increasingly integral in streamlining daily activities, users can look forward to a future where managing tabs is both simple and efficient.
