WWE NXT presented one of its most important events of 2024 on Tuesday: Spring Breakin' Week One. This could be the last time multiple stars competed for the gold brand ahead of the draft on Friday.

Trick Williams looked to ride a wave of momentum to defeat Ilja Dragunov for the NXT Championship. If he lost for the third time, though, he would have to leave the brand for good.

Roxanne Perez was not happy to defend her NXT Women's Championship against both Lyra Valkyria and Tatum Paxley. Who emerged with the gold?

Sol Ruca targeted revenge against the woman who put her on the shelf, Blair Davenport. Natalya and Lola Vice signed the contract for the first women's NXT Underground match.

The Family and No Quarter Catch Crew went to war in a six-man tag team match. Could Tony D'Angelo earn himself a shot at the Heritage Cup?

This show promised to be must-watch television for anyone following NXT.

NXT Women's Championship: Roxanne Perez (c) vs. Lyra Valkyria vs. Tatum Paxley

1 of 8

After a competitive battle in which all three women nearly picked up the win, Tatum Paxley caught Lyra Valkyria with a 450 splash, only for Roxanne Perez to fly in with a crucifix pin to claim victory.

    WHAT. AN. ENDING.#NXTSpringBreakin pic.twitter.com/XrYHKnYNWE

This was a great contest to open the show, and it showcased all three women. In particular, it was a big step-up moment for Paxley, who looked like she belonged throughout.

In fact, the crowd seemed most invested in the upset, and the booking at the end sold that Paxley was far closer to the title than anyone could have expected.

Assuming The Prodigy sticks around post-draft, Perez vs. Paxley is a match that WWE must run, finally giving the latter a chance to show what she can do one on one with top talent.

    Result

Perez def. Valkyria and Paxley by pinfall to retain the NXT Women's Championship

The Family vs. No Quarter Catch Crew

2 of 8

While Charlie Dempsey, Damon Kemp and Myles Borne looked great together, The Family divided and conquered.

Tony D'Angelo planted Dempsey with a spinebuster for a clean three-count.

The Family and No Quarter Catch Crew worked this like their careers depended on it here. This contest moved constantly and highlighted the trios chemistry of Dempsey, Kemp and Borne.

Even though it was the best the heels have looked, The Family still outmatched them move for move.

The Don is still a main event player in the ring, while Channing "Stacks" Lorenzo looks great every time out. And Luca Crusifino has matched their energy well early on.

With this win, D'Angelo should get the next shot at the Heritage Cup, though it is hard to imagine The Don can afford to lose at this stage during his singles run.

    Result

The Family def. No Quarter Catch Crew by pinfall.

Fallon Henley vs. Jaida Parker (w/ OTM)

3 of 8

Fallon Henley was rolling over Jaida Parker with big strikes, but a couple of timely distractions from OTM at ringside set up Parker to plant Henley with the Teardrop Hip Check for the win.

NXT's refusal to push Henley is growing concerning. With the draft likely to call up multiple talented women, she will be one of the top remaining female wrestlers in NXT. She should not be losing clean to Parker.

While Parker is growing popular with fans, she has a long way to go in the ring and is getting a big push too fast. This match was all Henley, and it should have continued to build her as the favorite to win the NXT Women's North American Championship.

Unless there is a drastic plan for Henley soon—winning gold or turning heel—she is being wasted on a brand that does not see her value.

    Result

    Henley def. Parker by pinfall.

Lola Vice Reveals Shayna Baszler as Training Partner for NXT Underground

4 of 8

Natalya and Lola Vice signed the contract for their NXT Underground match.

Lola Vice then revealed Shayna Baszler was her training partner. Karmen Petrovic knocked out The Queen of Spades, and Nattie sent Vice into the crowd at ringside.

This was as expected, bar The Queen of Spades' appearance. It was a flat segment that did not need to happen in the ring for a contest with such limited build.

There is a different vibe to Baszler in NXT. She comes off as untouchable, which is probably why she should not have sold a Petrovic kick like a knockout blow.

Still, it is good to see her back on the gold brand. She makes sense as the support to Vice, two legitimate MMA stars working together to take out the Superstars.

NXT general manager Ava sold this as a monumental moment for women's wrestling, but NXT Underground hardly has the legacy to match up to that promise. It is only the third of its type in WWE.

Beach Brawl: Blair Davenport vs. Sol Ruca

5 of 8

Blair Davenport unleashed the anger of Sol Ruca, who looked very comfortable laying in her shots on her rival.

Ruca caught Davenport with a springboard Soul Snatcher to win.

While the props at ringside got too silly in moments, this was a solid battle that showed Ruca's major upside as a performer. She can execute big, especially with a veteran opponent.

The right woman won as Ruca should be gearing up for a major climb in the NXT rankings after the draft. She has to be a solid favorite to become the first-ever women's North American champion.

Davenport's NXT run should be over from here. She has lost every big rivalry and is good enough to become a midcard role player on the main roster immediately.

    Result

    Ruca def. Davenport by pinfall.

Baron Corbin vs. Lexis King

6 of 8

Lexis King brought the fight to Baron Corbin and then found chance to hit a low blow behind the referee's back.

King followed up with the Coronation to pick up the victory.

While it was more solid than outstanding, this was by far the best match of King's NXT career so far, though Corbin is always reliable. He has showed that time and again in this return run with the gold brand.

In most situations, King should not be picking up a win over someone at Corbin's level. However, this feels like an unofficial farewell from the former Lone Wolf, who is ready to head back to Raw or SmackDown.

He put over an NXT heel who will need to step up this year and take this win as far as it can carry him.

Is King ready? He hasn't shown it yet, but NXT will give him every chance.

    Result

    King def. Corbin by pinfall.

NXT Championship: Ilja Dragunov (c) vs. Trick Williams

7 of 8

Ilja Dragunov and Trick Williams went to war for the last time.

This time, Trick would not be denied. In a mirror of their Vengeance Day match, the end saw them collide in the center of the ring, but it was the Trick Knee that sealed it this time.

In unsurprising news, this bout was electric. Trick and Dragunov have always clicked. This was a little rushed in comparison to their Vengeance Day war, but the two maximized their minutes.

There was little time to sell, but the two hit all their big spots to send the crowd into a frenzy. It lived up to its promise as a true passing-of-the-torch moment.

NXT did everything to sell this as one its most important matches. In particular, everyone sold this as Trick's moment: The chance to prove he's ready to run.

While Trick completed his initial journey, he will need to prove he can sustain his success without one of the best wrestlers in the world today on the other side.

Dragunov will now likely head to Raw or SmackDown in the draft, and he should become an immediate title contender. He has as high a ceiling as his longtime rival Gunther, who may soon be a world champion.

    Result

Trick def. Dragunov by pinfall to become the new NXT champion.

Overall Show

8 of 8

The mission statement for Spring Breakin' 2024 was simple: Complete Trick Williams' journey to the top. That absolutely landed in a fiery main event that will stand as one of NXT's best TV matches of the year.

The rest of the card was solid overall, though it felt like a more traditional episode.

Even the NXT Women's Championship match, which was great, was treated as several levels below the NXT Championship bout. Roxanne Perez deserved an entrance on a night when five different segments focused on building the main event.

The women's roster mostly carried the undercard, including a strong showcase for Sol Ruca that could be the first step in crowning her as champion sooner than later.

If this had been a premium live event, it may not have lived up to the billing; but as an episode of NXT, it's hard to beat this quality from opener to main event.
