UPDATE 5/4/24 10:10 AM: According to an updated news release from the OCSO, an armed man shot by a deputy Friday afternoon has died.

Deputies were called to Chez Elan Apartments on Racetrack Road around 4:30 p.m. Friday for a disturbance call.

"Hearing sounds of a disturbance, [the deputy] reacted in self-defense after he encountered a 23-year-old man with a gun and after the deputy had identified himself as law enforcement," said the news release.

The man was taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries. The deputy is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation. The names of the deputy and the man who was killed have not been released.

ORIGINAL STORY: OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — A deputy shot a man at an apartment complex who was armed with a gun, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to Chez Elan Apartments on Racetrack Road around 4:30 p.m. Friday for a disturbance call, according to OCSO.

SHOOTING LOCATION:

Officials said a deputy tried to contact the people inside the apartment involved, which is when a person opened the door armed with a gun. The deputy then "engaged," according to officials.

Officials said the deputy was not injured and the person in the apartment is being treated for their injuries.
