ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Sheriff said there was a home invasion that took place during the series of attacks by a suspect in a southeast neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.

"We are dealing with a city-county situation," said Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana. "Our county is in and out of the city here. We're dealing with an address (on) Florence and Eggleston."

The address Caruana is talking about is where the home invasion took place. The woman inside suffered multiple stab wounds.

"The young lady ran from him. She got some stab wounds in their hands and her face," said Caruana. "She is currently at a hospital."

This crime brought both the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office and the Rockford Police Department together to work hand in hand.

"Again, we're all working together on this situation to piece it together. He's in custody," said Caruana. "One of the deputies was able to take him into custody during that situation. And we're dealing with that situation right now."

The woman was brought to a local hospital and is in serious condition.

One person nearby went to help the victim and was injured in the process. He is in stable condition.

"One of the good Samaritans stopped to help her out," said Caruana. "He did get some stab wounds. He's fine. He is being checked out."

Police received the first call at 1:14 p.m. The suspect was taken into custody in the area of Holmes Street and Cleveland Avenue at 1:35 p.m.

He was being held at the police station awaiting charges.
