Royals to adjust Crossroads stadium plans, leave Oak Street open

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Royals have made adjustments to their proposed stadium plan in the Crossroads District.

The initial designs of the future stadium would incorporate the land of the former Kansas City Star building at 16th and McGee Streets. The stadium project would span onto Oak Street at 16th Street and up to eastbound Truman Road.

On Wednesday morning, Royals owner John Sherman stated that he had discussed with Kansas City leadership concerns over blocking Oak Street as part of their stadium development.

The concerns appear to be resolved.

"We have been listening to members of the Crossroads community and had thoughtful conversations with the Mayor and City Council to improve the ballpark district impact. Through these conversations we have come to realize the importance of keeping Oak Street open," Sherman said in a statement. "We acknowledge Oak Street is an integral part of the downtown experience, and therefore we agree to change the ballpark district design to keep Oak Street open. We look forward to working with the Mayor and City Council to begin this joint effort."

Two weeks ago, the Royals announced that the team will build a new stadium and ballpark district in the Crossroads District.

The new ballpark would seat about 34,000 fans, or roughly 3,000 fewer than Kauffman Stadium, and the Royals are hopeful it will be ready for the 2028 season.

But now eyes turn toward the April 2 election concerning Jackson County Question 1, the stadium sales tax extension between 2031 and 2070. The new stadium and ballpark district will cost about $2 billion, and the Royals ownership group has pledged to invest more than $1 billion in private funding for the stadium and district project.
