Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain has undergone shoulder surgery and there's no solid timeline for when he could return to the diamond.Reds manager David Bell said last week that McLain's Opening Day status was in doubt after undergoing an MRI on his sore left shoulder.According to the Reds, McLain's surgery addressed cartilage damage and repairs to his labrum in his left shoulder.The club says an exact timeline for McLain is to be determined and the hope is to have him back sometime in the 2024 season.McLain has had injury issues dating back to last year, seeing his 2023 season end in late September due to an oblique strain and had to sit out the first handful of spring training games after re-aggravating the oblique.What was once seen as the strength of the Reds entering the 2024 season, the team's infield depth is suddenly very thin.Not only will they be without McLain but also the services of top prospect Noelvi Marte, who was suspended 80 games earlier this month after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. He's eligible to return to the club on June 21.Cincinnati's top shortstop prospect, Edwin Arroyo, also underwent shoulder surgery this offseason and will miss all of 2024.
