Apple Ready to 'Let Loose,' Finally Introduce New iPads on May 7

Get ready for new Apple hardware. The company today announced it will hold a "special Apple event," dubbed Let Loose, on May 7.

This is an online-only reveal; we'll have to wait for WWDC next month for a splashy in-person event. But things kick off at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET. Watch live at apple.com/apple-events.

Apple didn't specify what is being let loose, but we have some ideas. The first hint comes from the artwork Apple included in the announcement; it's hard to miss that Apple Pencil. Currently, Apple offers a first- and second-gen stylus, plus a (somewhat confusing) USB-C model Pencil. We've seen rumors of a third-gen Pencil designed exclusively for an iPad Pro. This Pencil may see magnetized tips for easy switching and possible integration with the Find My network.

We're also expecting new iPads. Apple didn't release any new tablets in 2023, so it's time for a refresh. Rumors point to upgrades across the lineup.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who is usually in the know about all things Apple, seemingly confirmed it with a succinct tweet: "iPad event - May 7," he wrote.

We've also seen suggestions of FaceTime cameras for the iPad Pro series, a welcome addition. Other reports hint at OLED displays (for at least the Pro model), bringing the iPad closer to modern tablet specs, possibly leading to a thinner chassis.

We're holding out hope for more than one port on at least some models, even if that's unlikely. However, MagSafe charging might come to the iPad, which might require new chargers with higher-speed capabilities. As for the iPad Air, we may see a larger display offering, perhaps at 12.9 inches. A newer processor is likely, too, given the iPad Air is still on the M1, and if we're very lucky, the camera will move to a more sensible position.

But all of that is just rumor. We'll find out for sure at the Let Loose event in May.
