Stop-and-search powers have been stepped up in an area of Oldham after reports of a 'group of men with weapons' and an incident that has left a man with life changing injuries.

Officers have been given extra powers under Section 60 and 60AA to stop and search people in Royton following a 'number of incidents of disorder' last night (May 5).

The order allows police to stop and search anyone they have reason to believe is conducting criminal activities and carrying offensive weapons, or to direct them to remove face coverings. It is in place from 8pm tonight (May 5) until 4am tomorrow.

Earlier today, police arrested two boys on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon following an attack in Rochdale Road, Royton. The pair were arrested further afield in Oldham after smashing and flipping a vehicle thought to have been used in the robbery.

Superintendent Phil Hutchinson of GMP Oldham District, said: "Our officers are conducting several enquiries, but I fully understand that the nature of these incidents and our increased presence in the community will spark some concern.

"Please be assured that we are working round the clock to ensure the safety of the local community and to do this we have increased visible officers across the district to provide added reassurance to the public. If you have any concerns, or would like to share some information with them, please do not hesitate to speak to them; they are there to help you.

"We have authorised a section 60 and 60AA which is highlighted in the map. Within this area we are able to stop and search anyone if we have reason to believe they are conducting criminal activities, carrying offensive weapons, or to direct them to remove face coverings.

"We will continue to have a presence in the area beyond the conclusion of the additional powers and I would like to thank the public for their support. Please continue coming forwards with information that will allow us to take action to keep our streets safe.

"We are keen to gather as much information as possible in relation these incidents and would encourage anyone who may have seen anything or have information concerning this to contact us by calling 101 and quoting log number 1242 of 06/05/2024.

"Alternatively, if you would prefer to remain anonymous, you can report information to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Following the announcement, Oldham West & Royton MP Jim McMahon tweeted: "A Section 60 has been brought in covering the area around Royton Park and town centre. It follows serious violence involving weapons. Concerning spikes of reports here and in other areas over the past two days shows zero tolerance is needed, as well as visible and active policing. The police have my full support."
