A pupil for every secondary school classroom is missing most of their education, as record numbers of "ghost children" since the pandemic raise fears that thousands have given up on school.

Ministers are under pressure to do more to get children back to school as they acknowledge a "massive challenge" of chronic absenteeism, with 1 in 12 secondary pupils absent from school more often than not in some parts of the country.

The problem is most acute among vulnerable children, with one in ten secondary pupils in care missing most of their schooling, triple the rate of five years ago.

A rise in mental illness and behavioural changes linked to the pandemic lockdowns are thought to be among the reasons that the number of children
