As Andhra town logs 46 degree temperature, highest in India, IMD issues fresh heatwave warning for 2 states

The oppressive heat wave that has gripped South Peninsular India is expected to ease starting today, offering some relief to the region, according to India Meteorological Department. However, a new wave of scorching heat is forecasted to sweep over Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh from the 8th to the 10th of May this year. On Monday, isolated areas in Tamil Nadu experienced severe heat wave conditions, while pockets of Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka, and Telangana also faced intense heat. Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh has been battling heat wave conditions since April 24th, with Nandyal reporting a staggering maximum temperature of 46.0°C, making it the hottest location in the country, according to IMD.

Across various regions on Monday, maximum temperatures soared between 42-44°C in many areas, including West Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Rayalaseema, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam. Additionally, temperatures rose above normal levels by 4-7°C in certain parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Rayalaseema.

While most parts of the plains in Northwest India are expected to see minimal changes in maximum temperatures, West Rajasthan is likely to experience a 2-3°C increase over the next three days. Conversely, east India can anticipate a drop of about 3-4°C in maximum temperatures within 24 hours, with Maharashtra following suit with a decrease of 2-3°C over the next four days.



Heat Wave Warning

Moving forward, there is not expected to be any significant change in maximum temperatures across the rest of the country. But, according to IMD, heat wave conditions are anticipated to persist in isolated pockets of Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala, with additional occurrences in Interior Karnataka, East Rajasthan, West Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh between May 8th and 10th, 2024.

Moreover, hot and humid weather is forecasted for isolated pockets in the Gujarat region over the next five days, as well as in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Coastal Karnataka on May 7th and 8th, 2024. Warm night conditions are expected in isolated places across Kerala and Mahe on May 7th, 2024.
