BENGALURU: Amid heatwave alert, Karnataka is set for the second phase of polling on Tuesday in which 2.6 crore voters across 14 constituencies in north and central Karnataka are expected to exercise their franchise at 28,269 polling stations from 7am to 6pm. In this second phase, 227 candidates, including 21 women, will vie for electoral success. With temperatures expected to hover around 44 to 46 degrees Celsius, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alert for several districts in North Karnataka, including Kalaburagi, Bagalkot, Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, and Koppal. To ensure smooth polling, the Election Commission has undertaken necessary preparations, anticipating a significant voter turnout. The electoral battleground in north and central Karnataka primarily features a direct contest between the Congress and BJP, as the JD(S) is not contesting in this region. The state, which has 28 LS constituencies, is voting in two phases: 14 seats primarily in southern and coastal districts voted on April 26.
In the 2019 LS polls, the BJP secured victories in all 14 seats, triumphing over the Congress-JD(S) coalition.
