Tuesday, May 7: While North Interior Karnataka continues to reel under blistering heatwave conditions, a rainy spell seems to have brought temporary respite to its southern counterpart. Bengaluru, which was particularly parched and in desperate need of rains, heaved a sigh of relief when the heavens emptied buckets of water over it in the evening hours on Monday. But will this wet episode continue?

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation lies adjoining the northern portions of Karnataka, while a wind discontinuity extends between East Vidarbha and South Tamil Nadu. Under the combined influence of these systems, South India is experiencing copious rains.

In fact, heavy rains have been forecast over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra, Telangana and even South Interior Karnataka over the next 24-48 hours. And the same systems have been triggering rains over Bengaluru as well!

It has been raining on and off over the Karnataka capital since last weekend, and the wet weather has no doubt put Bengalureans in a merry mood. Despite the rainfall activity throwing life into disarray as roads got inundated and sparked traffic congestion, most residents seem to be glad for the rains. And the good news is that this rainy trend will continue almost throughout this week.

Local weather forecasts suggest that rains and thunderstorms are likely to lash Bengaluru till the end of this week. While daytime temperatures will continue to remain around three notches above normal, the rains will help bring down daytime mercury to some extent. Nighttime temperatures even slipped slightly below normal today.

Apart from Bengaluru, heavy rains are expected in multiple other districts like Mandhya, Mysore and Kodagu. Hailstorms are also likely over surrounding areas of Bengaluru like Chamarajanagar and Ramnagar today.

Given these forecasts, an orange alert has been issued over the entire South Interior Karnataka region for today so as to urge locals to 'be prepared' for the wet weather. This will be followed by a yellow watch (meaning 'be updated') in the coming days.

Bengaluru rains trigger traffic chaos and power outages

The IMD recorded 10.5 mm of rainfall by 8.30 PM, leaving many key roads submerged under water.

Commuters faced the brunt of the deluge, with several areas including Koramangala, MG Road, Indiranagar, and parts of Whitefield experiencing severe waterlogging. This rendered many routes impassable, forcing motorists to navigate through gridlocked traffic for hours. The situation was further exacerbated by uprooted trees, particularly in Mahadevapura.

Local authorities acknowledged the chaos and issued traffic advisories to help manage the situation. Efforts were also underway to clear water from inundated streets. However, the sudden downpour also led to power cuts in several parts of the city, adding to the woes of residents.

The frustration of Bengalureans was evident on social media, with many expressing their discontent with the city's infrastructure's inability to handle even moderate rainfall. The Bengaluru Traffic Police took to social media to inform the public about the situation, acknowledging the waterlogging and fallen trees at 33 and 16 locations respectively. They assured citizens that they were working round the clock to ensure smoother traffic flow and had implemented temporary diversions.

As the city recovers from yesterday's deluge, residents hope for a long-term solution to the perennial problems of waterlogging and traffic congestion that plague Bengaluru during the monsoon season.
