A major fire at a home on Victoria Avenue just south of Windsor's downtown did extensive damage early Monday morning.

The fire broke out before 2 a.m. and drew multiple fire crews from Windsor Fire and Rescue Services to knock it down.

Damages are estimated at $700,000.

"It's a beautiful house, just beautiful," said Ward 3 Coun. Renaldo Agostino, who lives just a few doors down.

Monday's fire was the second in four days to destroy century homes in the vicinity after the so-called Rainbow House in the 800 block of Ouellette Avenue was consumed by fire on May 2.

"Now this is just a teardown too," said Agostino.

A neighbour advised him Monday the home on Victoria had been abandoned for about seven years and that the owner was working on it.

The cause of the fire was undetermined as of Monday, and there were no injuries reported.

Roads in the area were closed for a time while fire crews fought the blaze. Fire investigators were on the scene later Monday morning.

The heavily damaged structure is located along a residential block filled with stately heritage homes.

Agostino said he gets many complaints all the time about vacant buildings and city properties in disrepair, but said he heard nothing about this one on his own block.

"There was no For Sale sign, there was nothing there. It makes no sense — at the very least it could have been filled with students," he said.
