The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is searching for a man who is believed to have sexually assaulted a woman Monday evening on a road near an overpass on Pitts Memorial Drive.

Const. James Cadigan told CBC News the suspect and the woman had never met before Monday.

The RNC said the woman was taken to hospital for medical attention.

The investigation is focused on Bay Bulls Road, particularly near the Pitts Memorial Drive overpass, which is east of Bowring Park and connects with Columbus Drive, another arterial that runs through St. John's.

The man is believed to have been on a bicycle.

Police are asking anyone who has video taken of a man riding a bicycle in the area between Bay Bulls Road and Columbus Drive between 8 p.m. NT and midnight on Monday to contact the RNC or the anonymous Crime Stoppers service.
