A person was rescued from the fast-flowing water of Winnipeg's Assiniboine River on Sunday evening near the Donald Street bridge.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called just before 5:30 p.m. and found a person being pulled by the current.

They were able to reach the individual and safely bring them to shore, according to a news release, which doesn't say how the crews were able to make contact.

The patient was assessed and treated by paramedics, then transported to hospital in critical condition.

At this time, it is not known how the person ended up in the water or how long they were there, the release states.

The Assiniboine is running high right now, fueled by rains in the west. Parts of the path alongside of it have become flooded.

People are urged to use extreme caution around all waterways, including drainage ditches, culverts, streams, creeks, retention ponds, and rivers, the release states.

"Water is cold and can be swift moving at this time of the year. There may be seen and unseen debris in the water," the release says.

Dog owners are also reminded to keep their pets on leash around waterways to prevent them from chasing geese or ducks into the water.

Anyone who sees someone struggling in the water should call 911 immediately and try to keep track of where the person is. Do not go in after them. Wait for first responders.

Last year, WFPS says it responded to approximately 150 water rescue calls.
