One person is in critical condition after emergency responders pulled them from the Assiniboine River Sunday evening.

First responders were summoned to a person in the river near the Donald Street bridge about 5:26 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release.

The person was being pulled by the current toward the Red River. WFPS crews used water rescue equipment to bring them back to shore, where they were treated by paramedics and taken to hospital in critical condition.

WFPS said it is not known why the person was in the water or for how long.
