One cat and one dog are dead after a fire near LeBreton Flats.

Around 7 p.m. on May 5, Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to a call from a monitoring company reporting active fire alarms in the 100 block of Booth St.

A short time later, multiple 9-1-1 callers reported a fire in a five-storey residential high-rise.

Firefighters arrived on scene two minutes after being dispatched and confirmed heavy black smoke coming from a fourth floor window at the front of the building.

Firefighters began a fast attack and located the fire unit on the fourth floor.

When crews breached the unit door, they were met with smoke and zero visibility conditions.

While searching the unit, firefighters located a resident unconscious and brought them down to the lobby for medical treatment.

At 7:19 p.m., firefighters confirmed the victim had regained a pulse.

Two dogs and one cat were also found inside the unit and were all unconscious, but despite efforts, only one dog was able to be revived.

The other dog and cat succumbed to their injuries.

The fire, which was located in the bedroom where the victim was found, was declared under control within about 15 minutes of crews arriving on scene.

The fire was contained to the unit of origin and a fire investigator responded to the scene.
