A man believed to be responsible for stealing more than $300,000 worth of product from LCBO stores across the province has been arrested by the Guelph Police Service. The Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft team has been investigating along with officials from the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, Canadian Border Services Agency, OPP's Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) squad and other police services. The investigation identified a suspect believed to have committed more than 100 thefts from LCBO stores in Guelph and elsewhere in Ontario. Sunday afternoon, members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit located two males sleeping in a stolen car at an address in St. Catharines. With assistance from members of the Niagara Regional Police Service the vehicle was blocked in. The males were awakened, but the driver immediately began driving forwards and backwards repeatedly striking marked and unmarked cruisers. Officers broke the car's windows and were able to take both males into custody. Both provided identification in fake names before their true identities were determined. A 27-year-old man and 35-year-old man, both of no fixed address, are charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000, two counts of possessing stolen property under $5,000, obstructing police, possessing identity documents and breaching court orders. The younger man is also charged with dangerous driving and has outstanding warrants in 10 other jurisdictions. "This investigation and the resulting arrests were made possible through the cooperative efforts of our members and partner agencies," said Police Chief Gord Cobey. "This investigation highlights the value to the community of our Break Enter Auto Theft Unit." Both males were held for bail hearings in Guelph Monday.
