Man fighting for life after being shot in the face

A Melbourne man is fighting for life after being shot in the face during what police believe was a targeted attack on the M80 Ring Rd.

The 50-year-old from Truganina was driven to Royal Melbourne Hospital with gunshot wounds and had thousands of dollars in cash on him, 7NEWS understands.

Police were initially alerted to an injured man on the freeway near Pascoe Vale Rd, Jacana about 12.10pm on Tuesday.

When officers arrived they could not find the man but were notified that a person had presented to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Parkville with injuries suspected of being inflicted by a firearm.

7NEWS understands the shooting has links to organised crime, although police said it is too early to comment on a motive.

"Investigations into the incident remain ongoing but at this time it is believed to be a targeted attack," police said.
