Veteran television reporter turned corporate consultant Liam Cox has been charged with choking and assaulting a woman in an alleged domestic violence incident which led to her hospitalisation on Saturday night.

Police say that they were called to a Vaucluse semi-detached house just before midnight on Saturday.

"A 39-year-old woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition," NSW Police said.

"The following day, police arrested a 39-year-old man at a hotel in Bondi Beach."

Cox was taken to Waverley police station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV) and intentionally choke (DV).

Police also took out an apprehended domestic violence order on behalf of the woman against Cox.

Court documents obtained by the Herald show the alleged incident took place late at night, over a 90-minute period.

Cox was refused bail to appear in Waverley Local Court on Monday. Magistrate Julie Huber again refused bail for Cox to appear in Downing Centre Local Court later this month.

After a 20-year reporting career with stints at Triple M, Channel 10 and Channel Seven, Cox joined communications firm Wilkinson Butler where he served as "a trusted adviser to chief executives and boards during some of the most high-profile, intense crises in recent memory" and worked closely with lawyers, according to the firm's website.

"Liam is strongly values-driven," says Wilkinson Butler's website.

Cox will be stood down from his role, Wilkinson Butler managing director Andrew Butler said on Tuesday.

"After learning the allegations of the events on Saturday night, we are profoundly shocked by the very serious charges Liam faces," he said.

"As with many of our team members, we are close to Liam's family, and find the news heartbreaking for the lasting impact it will have on them.

"We are standing Liam down.

"We have a duty of care to both parties and to our staff and will work on how we can best support Liam's family, including access to counselling."
