A woman on her way home from work has died in a horrific head-on collision in Melbourne's southeast.

A silver hatch and a white Toyota Hilux ute collided on Glasscocks Rd, Hampton Park just before 7.15am on Tuesday.

The driver of the hatch, a 35-year-old woman, died at the scene.

Two people — a 34-year-old female passenger of the hatch and the 20-year-old driver of the ute — were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police believe the driver of the ute was a P-plater who veered onto the wrong side of the road.

Senior Acting Sergeant Mick Hardiman said early indications suggested speed was a factor.

"It ... appears that (the) driver has crossed onto the wrong side of the road but there's still some investigation to be undertaken to confirm all that," he said.

"This is a significant collision. We know ... any speed in a collision can have fatal consequences and that's what we've got here."

Hardiman said police had received information the Hilux may have been driving "erratically" in the lead up to the crash.

The driver has not yet undergone drug or alcohol testing due to their condition but that will form part of the investigation.

Hardiman urged drivers to take care on the roads and to "look after each other".

"We're urging the public to take care, drive to the conditions and look after each other because we're in a position now that we've got another person that's not going home tonight," he said.

"This family's life will never be the same."

A total of 98 people have died on Victorian roads so far this year.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
