ACT police say the human remains found near Point Hut Crossing in Canberra's south are likely to be those of missing Canberra man Tim Lyons. The 38-year-old was last seen in the neighbouring suburb of Gordon on December 19, 2023. Police said the human remains were found by two people undertaking research activity near the northern end of the crossing on the Murrumbidgee River about 3:45pm Sunday. Detective Superintendent Hall O'Meagher said the body had been in the area "for some time" and was not in a condition to be visually identified. "The remains, as you can appreciate, having been in the open and in the environment for some time, poses some difficulties for us in terms of identification and also recovery," he said. Mr Lyons's family will provide DNA to assist with the identification process, he said. "We have been in contact with Mr Lyons's family. We're working closely with them in this difficult time for them," Detective Superintendent O'Meagher said. "They're assisting us with our inquiries and we're providing them with the support that they need during this difficult time." Detective Superintendent Hall O'Meagher says the cause of death is not yet known. (ABC News: Isaac Nowroozi) Detective Superintendent O'Meagher said a post mortem later this week should help confirm the identity of the remains through forensic evidence and how they died. He said so far there was no evidence to suggest the death was suspicious "however we're keeping an open mind". "Our inquiries this week will put us in a better place to be able to make that determination," Detective Superintendent O'Meagher said. Police are urging anyone who has visited Point Hut Crossing over the past few months and may have information about Mr Lyons to contact Crime Stoppers.
