LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The newest way retailers trick you to part with more of your money? Deals that claim you can save more if you spend more.

These days, sale prices just aren't what they used to be. Even if you grab bogo's or coupons, everything still seems so expensive.

Some retailers have come up with a new type of markdown - it's called "spaving."

Spaving is short for "spending more to save more."

You've seen it. Spend $100 and get $20 back, or buy one and get a second one free, or at half price.

The goal is to get you to spend more than what you had already planned, and it's working!

It can lead you to overspend and run up credit card debt.

CNBC suggests you unsubscribe to store emails and apps, which is where most shoppers are hearing about the deals.

Sometimes just buying what you went to the store for is the smarter move.
