Frontier Airlines revamps pricing structure, removes some change fees

DENVER — Frontier Airlines is officially overhauling its pricing structure, bringing it more in line with its larger competitors.

Going forward, the Denver-based airline will eliminate change fees on some tickets and create four fare classes to appeal to more travelers. The airline said the changes would make buying a ticket less complicated. 

"Today marks the beginning of a new era for Frontier - one with transparency in our prices, no change fees and the lowest total price," said Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier Airlines, in a statement. "This is 'The New Frontier' and we are committed to offering more than the lowest fares - we deliver the best price for all the options you want and the customer support you need, when you need it. No gimmicks, just really low prices and good customer service."

Here are the changes that will take effect.

Four fare classes

The airline is switching over to four different fare classes: basic, economy, premium, and business. Travelers in "basic" will get a personal item, but will still have to pay additional fees for extras, like bringing a carry-on bag and/or selecting a seat. 

Passengers not traveling on a basic fare will also have the ability to change and/or cancel a flight without fees. 

Other moves

• Frontier customers who receive a flight credit on or after May 17 will now get 12 months (instead of three) to redeem.
• Live phone support is returning for customers with elite status or those within 24 hours of their flight. 
• Passengers who are able to find a lower-priced flight elsewhere are eligible to receive 2,500 Frontier miles.
