No German club had ever navigated through a domestic league campaign without suffering a defeat. Leverkusen notched 28 victories with six draws in 2023-24.

This has been quite the journey for a club once derisively dubbed "Neverkusen" among other nicknames for its propensity to come up short. It was the Bundesliga runner-up five times before finally making its breakthrough this year.

Leverkusen's unblemished record isn't limited to the Bundesliga. The team has advanced to the finals of the DFB-Pokal and Europa League, in the latter case having picked up six wins from six matches in the group stage.

Bayer Leverkusen sealed the league title in mid-April. Especially with the enormity of what that meant for the wider history, you would've forgiven the players for losing their focus and suffering a meaningless defeat here or there. Instead, they've clearly had their minds set on invincibility.

There was Josip Stanisic's equalizer in the seventh minute of stoppage time against Borussia Dortmund on April 21. The following matchday, Robert Andrich scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time to preserve a 2-2 draw with VfB Stuttgart. In the Europa League, Jeremie Frimpong (89th minute) and Stanisic (97th minute) each had late equalizers against AS Roma and West Ham United respectively.

Leverkusen has two more matches remaining to finish off a perfect season in every sense of the word. It plays Atalanta in the Europa League final next Wednesday and then takes on Kaiserslautern for the DFB-Pokal title on May 25.
