How often does one get to witness night skies turn radiant, vibrant blue? Rarely. But that's exactly what happened in Spain and neighbouring Portugal on Saturday night.

Residents in both these countries were in for a spectacular visual treat when a sudden meteor shower illuminated the night skies, marking an experience of a lifetime.

People who got to witness the dazzling meteor show captured it on their cameras and took to social media to share different shades of the rare celestial event.

Some of the video clips shared on X (formerly Twitter) showed the meteor shower as seen in Portugal:

Sharing on X different angles of meteor sightings in Spain and Portugal, internet personality Colling Rugg wrote:

"JUST IN: Meteor spotted in the skies over Spain and Portugal. This is insane. Early reports claim that the blue flash could be seen darting through the night sky for hundreds of kilometers. At the moment, it has not been confirmed if it hit the Earth's surface however some reports say it may have fallen near the town of Castro Daire. Other reports say it was closer to Pinheiro."

Thrilled nature enthusiasts shared their reactions to the meteor shower, whether experienced in person or online.

The eye-catching meteor spectacle came two weeks after a forecast said that meteors would be streaking across the sky in the coming days as Earth passes through the dusty debris left behind by the famous Halley's Comet, igniting the annual Eta Aquariid meteor shower.

Meteors, also known as shooting stars or falling stars, are space rocks and other material that burn up as they plummet through Earth's atmosphere, leaving behind bright streaks in the sky.

Comets like Halley's Comet can be a source of these meteor showers as they shed dust and debris during their orbits around the Sun.
