SHARE Health experts say that a new COVID-19 variant could threaten a summer surge in cases. The variant, named 'KP.2,' is now the leading variant in the U.S. It made up just 1% of cases in mid-March, but now it makes up more than a quarter of cases. Early lab tests suggest that the variant might be better at evading our immune defenses and could be slightly more infectious than previous variants. That's why researchers say they are closely watching whether the variant will drive a summer spike in infections.
