MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For days barbeque teams across the country have fired up their grills to face off against some of the best pitmasters in the world at the 46th World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest.

To commemorate the final round of judging, WREG went to Tiger Lane to see each crew prepare for the final showdown.

"You're going up against 140 of the best," Ryan King of B.O.K. BBQ Team said. "People don't come here just because they want to spend a weekend in Memphis. They come here to get a win."

King told WREG that this was his first year competing, but his team's second. His teammates came from all over the nation, including states like Florida, Georgia and Washington.

"We may be rookies here, but we're not rookies when it comes to cooking BBQ," King said.

The BBQ festival is not only reaching teams across the country but around the world too.

An example of the festival's international impact is Juan Garza, the CEO of the Mexican Society of Grillers and a member of the Mexican BBQ Team.

Garza told WREG that this was their 10th year competing and as much as they enjoy winning, the thing they value most are the relationships they've built over the years.

"They taught us tips and you get pieces from different guys," Garza said. "You build your - I don't want to say recipe - your technique to develop what we have today."

While they learn from others, Garza said the team is still determined to stay true to recipes they've cultivated back home.

"We give it our little kicks on our recipe and our technique to put it in there so it has some of our roots into that dish, but in the end, you're trying to do Memphis BBQ," Garza said. "It needs to have that sweetness and it needs to have that tanginess."

However, no matter where they are from, each team has one goal in mind.

"We're hoping to win the whole thing - the world championship," King said.

For those looking to join in on the excitement, the park is open until tonight at 10 p.m.

Tickers can be bought online or at the gate.
