Mahindra has revealed that the Thar has the second highest bookings of any of its SUVs, at about 59,000. The pending bookings include numbers for both Thar 4x4 and Thar RWD.

  1. Thar's waiting period down from last month
  2. RWD variants have longer waiting periods
  3. Thar 5-door launch in the coming months

Mahindra says that the Thar receives around 7,000 bookings every month and the backlog has slightly reduced from 71,000 units in February 2024. This also means that the waiting period should have come down by 4-6 weeks depending on the configuration. The Thar 4x4 had a waiting period ranging from 6 weeks to 2 months, while the Thar 4x2's waiting period, as of last month, hovered between 4 and 10 months.

Mahindra Thar: powertrain, price

The Thar 4x4 is available in two engine options: a 152hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 132hp, 2.2-litre diesel. Both engines get the option of a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Pricing for the Thar 4WD ranges from Rs 14.30 lakh to 17.60 lakh.

The 4x2 version of the SUV carries over the turbo-petrol engine, but gets a smaller 1.5-litre diesel engine making 118hp and 300Nm. The Thar RWD petrol is only available with the 6-speed AT, while the diesel gets a 6-speed manual as standard. The 4x2 variants are currently priced from Rs 11.35 lakh-14.10 lakh.

The Mahindra Thar line-up will expand this year with the introduction of the upcoming Thar 5-door. The 5-door version will likely be called the Thar Armada, and will be available with both petrol and diesel engine options, along with a range of additional equipment over the 3-door Thar.
