KOMEN MORE THAN PINK WALK THIS MORNING, ALL FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH. A SEA OF PINK. EACH PERSON WALKING THE SUSAN G. KOMEN PINK WALK WITH SOMEONE ON THEIR MIND. SO MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN IN DECEMBER, DECEMBER 18TH AND JANUARY 23RD. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TRIPLE NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER IN THE MIDST OF PREPARING FOR SURGERY AND RADIATION. LISA PAVELKO SAYS FOR HER, THIS WALK IS ABOUT HER DAUGHTER. IT'S ALL ABOUT RAISING AWARENESS SO THAT HOPEFULLY ONE DAY SHE DOES NOT EVER HAVE TO EXPERIENCE SOMETHING LIKE THIS. FRIENDS, ENTIRE FAMILIES, MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS WALKING TOGETHER. SHE WAS MY ROCK, GOT ME THROUGH CHEMO, GOT ME THROUGH SURGERY, EVERYTHING. CANCER SURVIVOR NIA CALVERT WALKING FOR HER DAUGHTER WHO DIED OF BREAST CANCER AT 26 YEARS OLD. WE ARE VERY BIG ON ADVOCATING FOR YOUNGER PEOPLE TO GET MAMMOGRAMS. IF YOU NOTICE ANYTHING, ANY CHANGES IN YOUR BREAST, SKIN, ANY LEAKAGE, ANYTHING LIKE THAT, REGARDLESS OF YOUR AGE, YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU'RE GETTING CHECKED OUT AND HAVE IT SEEN BY YOUR DOCTOR AND ADVOCATE, ADVOCATE, ADVOCATE. WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED AT 33 YEARS OLD, AFTER BEING TOLD I WAS TOO YOUNG FOR BREAST CANCER AND IT WAS SUCH A SHOCK. UM, AND IT WAS VERY QUICKLY, YOU KNOW, I WAS DIAGNOSED, I HAD MY BILATERAL MASTECTOMY, I DID AN EGG RETRIEVAL BECAUSE MY FERTILITY WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM ME. UM, CHEMO, CHEMO, CHEMO, CHEMO, RADIATION. AND IT JUST SEEMS LIKE IT'S HAS BEEN NONSTOP FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE PINK WALK RAISING $388,000 SO FAR WITH THE GOAL OF 500,000 BY JUNE 16TH. PITTSBURGH'S ACTION NEWS FOUR TEAM CHEERING ON THE ESTIMATED 6000 WALKERS. THIS CROWD PROVING NO ONE HAS TO FIGHT CANCER ALONE. IT CAN BE OVERWHELMING. LIKE JUST, YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THERE'S TIMES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE. BUT TO SEE LIKE ALL THIS AND EVEN PEOPLE WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS, IT CAN BE OVERWHELMING. Sunday marks the 32nd More than Pink Walk, formerly known as The Race for the Cure at Schenley Park.WTAE was there as the opening ceremony began at 9 a.m. RELATED: Photos from 2024 More than Pink Walk"Here in Pittsburgh, we're advancing breakthrough research that is saving lives and bringing us closer to the cures for breast cancer, but we cannot do it alone. This year's Walk is not just an event; it's a pivotal moment to secure vital funds, that will make better treatments and equitable care available for all. We hope you can join us as we collectively pave the way for a future free from the burden of breast cancer," Susan G. Komen's Develop Manager of Western Pennsylvania, Molly Sweet, said.It is estimated over 13,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Pennsylvania. WTAE's Andrew Stockey, Michelle Wright and additional anchors will serve as the walk's Emcees. The names will then be carried down the Pathway of Hope procession.
