The 2024 PGA Championship returns this week for a fourth time to Valhalla Golf Club.

Rory McIlroy won the last major contested there at the 2014 PGA Championship, but in case you're not too familiar with the 1986 Jack Nicklaus design (or a fan of Norse mythology), you might be wondering, "Where the heck is Vahalla, anyways?" Don't worry, we got you covered.

Where is Valhalla?

In Norse mythology, Valhalla is the mythical great hall where Viking warriors go to feast in the afterlife after they are killed in battle. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Valhalla had a similar story, as the place where heroes and honored dead went in the Thor movies.

But in real life, Valhalla Golf Club is located on the edge of Louisville, Ky., roughly a 30-minute drive from downtown and the Indiana border. It's also only a 30-minute drive to Churchill Downs, the famous host of the Kentucky Derby. This is the first year the PGA Championship at Valhalla and the Kentucky Derby take place in the same month (the three previous PGAs at Valhalla were all in August).

According to the club's website, the name "Valhalla" was chosen from Norse mythology because the course is now "paradise for championship golf."
